The Four Pillars Explained: Year, Month, Day & Hour in BaZi
Learn the meaning of each of the Four Pillars in BaZi—year, month, day, and hour. Discover how they shape your chart and how to calculate them with our free tool.
The Four Pillars of BaZi (also known as the Chinese Four Pillars) form the foundation of every BaZi chart. They are four pairs of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches derived from your birth year, month, day, and hour. Each pillar reveals different aspects of your personality, strengths, and life patterns. In this guide, we’ll explain the meaning of each pillar—year, month, day, and hour—and how they fit together to create your unique BaZi chart.
What Are the Four Pillars?
Each pillar consists of a Heavenly Stem (天干) and an Earthly Branch (地支). Together, these eight characters (hence the Chinese name "BaZi" meaning eight characters) encode the energy of the time you were born. The Four Pillars are arranged in a specific order: Year Pillar at the top, followed by Month Pillar, Day Pillar, and Hour Pillar at the bottom. This structure is used in the Free BaZi Calculator to generate your personal chart.
| Pillar | Component 1 | Component 2 | Represents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Year | Heavenly Stem | Earthly Branch | Ancestral influence, early childhood, family background |
| Month | Heavenly Stem | Earthly Branch | Parents, career path, social environment |
| Day | Heavenly Stem (Day Master) | Earthly Branch (Spouse Palace) | Self, spouse, core personality |
| Hour | Heavenly Stem | Earthly Branch | Children, late life, hidden talents |
The Year Pillar
The Year Pillar is derived from your birth year in the Chinese sexagenary cycle. It represents your ancestral roots, early family environment, and influences from previous generations. It also sets the stage for your early childhood years. The Heavenly Stem of the Year Pillar is often used to determine the Luck Pillar beginning age.
The Month Pillar
The Month Pillar comes from your birth month, but it is based on the Chinese solar calendar, not the lunar calendar. It reflects your parents, career tendencies, and the social environment you were born into. The Month Pillar also reveals the seasonal element (Five Elements) that dominates your chart. For example, someone born in the month of Tiger (寅) in spring has strong Wood energy.
The Day Pillar
The Day Pillar is the most important pillar in your BaZi chart. The Heavenly Stem of this pillar is called the Day Master (日主), which represents you – your essence, character, and life force. The Earthly Branch of the Day Pillar is known as the Spouse Palace, revealing qualities of your partner and the state of your relationships. Many BaZi readings start with analyzing the Day Master's element and its interactions with the other pillars.
The Hour Pillar
The Hour Pillar represents your children, late-life achievements, and hidden talents. It is also linked to your private life and inner thoughts. The Hour Pillar is derived from your exact birth time, using the two-hour Chinese time period (Shichen). Even if you don’t know your exact birth time, the Hour Pillar can be estimated or left blank (which still provides valuable insights).

Common Misconceptions About the Four Pillars
- Only the Year Pillar matters: In reality, the Day Pillar is the most significant because it contains the Day Master.
- Pillars are fixed: While the pillars themselves do not change, their influence shifts over time through Luck Pillars and annual cycles.
- Hour Pillar is optional: Even without exact birth time, the first three pillars can still offer deep insights. The Hour Pillar adds detail but is not required for a basic reading.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the Day Pillar the most important?
Because the Day Pillar houses the Day Master, which is the core of your identity in BaZi. All other pillars interact with the Day Master to indicate strengths, weaknesses, and life trends.
What if I don’t know my birth hour?
You can still generate a chart using only your date of birth. The calculator will leave the Hour Pillar empty, and you can still analyze the Year, Month, and Day pillars. Some practitioners use multiple possible hours to see variations.
How does True Solar Time affect the Hour Pillar?
True Solar Time corrects the two-hour time periods based on your longitude. Without this correction, your Hour Pillar could be off by one or even two branches. This is why birth location is important.
Can I read my own chart as a beginner?
Yes. Start by identifying your Day Master element. Then see which other elements support or clash with it. The Free BaZi Calculator provides basic readings to help you learn.
